My second great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Powell) Reagan Edwards, was born to Oliver C. Powell and Eliza (McCrary) Powell in Fulton County, Georgia, on 16 April 1858. Mary’s middle name (Elizabeth) is from her death certificate. All other records give her middle name as Eliza.
Mary’s father was killed in the War. Her mother Eliza Powell [Mrs. O. C. Powell] is listed as a widow on the 1863 Salt List in Bartow County, Georgia. Mary Powell married first Albert H. Reagan on 16 November 1873 in Bartow County, Georgia. They had two known children: McAfee and Birdie [Bertha Lorena] – my great-grandmother. Albert H. Reagan died 09 May 1889 in Bartow County. On 07 July 1892 (Mrs.) Mary Ragan married W. T. Edwards in Bartow County.
1900 U.S. census – Georgia, Bartow County, Sixth District
William T. Edwards (49, born Georgia), Mary E. (35, born Georgia), Mettie E. (F, 16), Henry (12), Artie (6), Linnie (F, 3), and Arthur (1) lived in dwelling 115 on a farm that was owned. All children born in Georgia. William and Mary had been married 8 years. Mary had borne 5 children, all living — 2 with Albert H. Reagan: McAfee and Bertha Lorena “Birdie”; 3 with William T. Edwards: Artie, Linnie, and Arthur. Since all five of her children were alive, indication is that the elusive McAfee Reagan was still alive in 1900. Daughter Bertha Lorena “Birdie” Reagan married James Edmon Green in 1895, Bartow County. The Edwards family lived next to Bunyon T. Green and his family. Bunyon was a brother of James Edmon (both were sons of John Calvin Green).
1910 U. S. census – Georgia, Bartow County, Sixth District [936 GMD]
William T. (56), Mary E. (52), Artie L. B. (F, 16), Linnie S. (F, 13), Arthur (11), and William G. Edwards (84) lived in dwelling 60 on Cedar Creek and Cassville Road. William and Mary had both been married twice and married to each other for 18 years. Of Mary’s 5 children, 4 were living. McAfee Reagan must have died between 1900 and 1910. William G. was the father of William T. The family of William T. lived next door to John H. [John Calvin] Green and his family. The next family was James E. and Birdie (Reagan) Green. James was a son of John Calvin and Phoebe (Barton) Green and Birdie was the daughter of Mary Powell and her first husband, Albert H. Reagan.
1920 U. S. census – Florida, Orange County, Zellwood
W. T. Edwards (67) and Mary (57) lived in dwelling 68 with the family of James A. Edwards (23). James and his wife, Lottie (18), had a daughter, Mary Hazel (2 months). James and Lottie were born in Georgia; Mary Hazel in Tennessee. William and James were farmers. Lottie, daughter of James Edmon Green and Bertha “Birdie” (Reagan) Green, was Mary Edwards’ granddaughter.
1928 – Florida, Lake County, Mount Dora
Mary Edwards (70) died of chronic endocarditis with contributory pulmonary tuberculosis on 09 May 1928. Although her age varies considerably over the available records, Mary’s birth date on her Florida death certificate (16 April 1858) is consistent with earlier records. Her father’s surname is given as Powell on her death certificate. Mary was born in Atlanta per the death certificate and this is consistent with her presence there in the family of O. C. Powell in 1860, age 3.
Mary Elizabeth (Powell) Reagan Edwards is buried in Pine Forest Cemetery, Mount Dora, Lake County, Florida, with related Green(e) and Edwards families. FindAGrave.com memorial no. 17793247.
